Update and Thank You: Refugee Donations DriveWritten by admin on Dec 29, 2015 in - No Comments
Dear Church at the Well,
This year’s Winter Outerwear & Household Goods Donation Drive to benefit refugees arriving to Vermont has come to an end, and we want to let you know that we were overwhelmed by your enthusiastic participation and warm-hearted generosity. You supplied a plethora of winter jackets, hats, vests, fleeces, and other outerwear; warm blankets; notebooks, pens, pencils, and envelopes; shampoo, toothbrushes, soap, and other toiletries; kitchen utensils and even a full set of pots and pans.
Callie and I delivered your donations each week as we collected them, and the staff members at the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program were delighted to receive your donations. You supplied multiple bags of outerwear each week, and on the last week, they filled up the entire back of my Volvo station wagon as well as the back seats! These items are truly needed, and the staff made it clear that they were very grateful.
While I was bringing in the boxes, bags, and laundry baskets full of donations from my car on the last drop-off, a thin, quiet African man who spoke almost no English arrived on his bike wearing a sweatshirt, and I could see him talking to the office worker, then trying on winter coats in the lobby. As I carried the final load in, he was walking out the door and said a very joyful “hi” to me as we passed. He was wearing a winter jacket he had picked out, and he was leaving on his bike with a beaming smile on his face. This was the highlight of my day, and it made me happy to know that because of our church’s generosity, this story will be multiplied many times over.
With deep gratitude for helping us to extend God’s love,
Callie and Abby
